Eddie Gray’s younger brother Frank was called up for his first team debut, and he celebrated it in style with a goal. It was a crushing defeat for Crystal Palace that preceded the end of Leeds United's season, their victory over the London club was a last hurrah for Don Revie's side.

United had chased the Division One title throughout the 1972-73 season, and their 4-0 victory over Palace on the weekend of Easter extended the dream for Leeds and their supporters. But when their next appointment, a visit to future champions Liverpool forty-eight hours later, ended in a 2-0 defeat, Revie was forced to concede that the Championship was heading for Anfield, despite his side's brave and sustained challenge.

Palace were behind after five minutes and beaten by half-time, 3-0 down to goals from Billy Bremner, Frank Gray and Peter Lorimer. A crowd of more than 31,000 turned out to support United, and their followers were rewarded with another crushing home success.

Palace and Birmingham both lost 4-0 at Elland Road during the 72-73 campaign, and Derby County were routed 5-0 at the start of October. Revie's players rounded off the term with a 6-1 hammering of Arsenal, but the big prize had gone by then. United's defeat at Anfield saw to that.

Allan Clarke completed the win over Palace with a goal in the seventy-seventh minute, and the impressive result was the ideal preparation for a daunting trip to Merseyside.
